As more products made from cannabis have become easier to get, vets are noticing more pet owners are curious about using these items for their animals. It’s crucial to know the laws about cannabis when talking to pet owners about if these items are legal, safe, or helpful for treating health issues in animals.

Cannabis (split into marijuana and hemp categories) is treated differently by federal and state laws. Over half the states in the U.S. have approved laws allowing medical marijuana for people with strict rules. Some states even let people use it just for fun. But these laws for people don’t cover animals. Recently, though, some states have started making rules about using products made from hemp in animals. CBD, a hemp product, seems really safe for dogs and doesn’t usually change their behavior. Research shows that even giving dogs a lot of CBD oil doesn’t cause more problems than just oil by itself for dogs or cats.

But, we need more research over a longer time because there’s a chance it could affect the liver, especially if CBD is used with other drugs.

Another thing to think about is how CBD might affect how other medicines work in the body. Some drugs slow down how the body handles other medicines, which could make those other drugs harmful.

Usually, it takes about two weeks to see CBD’s effects after starting the vet-recommended dose. But, the body might get used to drugs for the nervous system over time.

If the body gets used to it, a bigger dose might be needed to help with the symptoms.

You should talk to your vet about any other medicines or supplements your pet is taking and understand the possible good effects, how much to give, and what to watch out for when giving CBD to your pet.
