Does CBD Salve Work for Nerve Pain?

Does CBD Salve Work for Nerve Pain

What is nerve pain?

CBD salve may help soothe some of the discomfort associated with nerve pain, especially when it is applied directly to a specific area. However, research on topical CBD and neuropathy is still limited.

There has been at least one small human study with encouraging results, but that does not prove that CBD salve can repair damaged nerves or treat the underlying cause of neuropathy. I think it is important to be honest about that distinction.

A topical CBD product may be worth considering as part of your normal comfort routine, but persistent burning, tingling, numbness or shooting pain should also be discussed with a healthcare professional.

What Does Nerve Pain Feel Like?

Nerve pain is different from the soreness you might experience after exercising or working in the yard. It usually develops when a nerve is damaged, irritated or no longer communicating properly.

People often describe nerve discomfort as:

  • Burning
  • Tingling
  • Pins and needles
  • Shooting or stabbing sensations
  • Unusual sensitivity to touch
  • Numbness
  • Hot or cold sensations
  • Pain caused by light pressure

Neuropathy commonly affects the feet, toes, hands and fingers, although it can appear in other areas.

Diabetes is a common cause of peripheral neuropathy, but nerve symptoms can also be connected to injuries, infections, vitamin deficiencies, certain medications and other medical conditions. Sometimes the cause is not immediately obvious.

That is why a CBD salve should not be used as a substitute for finding out what is causing the problem.

What Does the Research Say About Topical CBD for Nerve Pain?

Research specifically examining CBD salve for nerve pain is still in its early stages.

One small study published in 2020 followed 29 people with peripheral neuropathy. Participants applied either a topical CBD product or a placebo to areas where they were experiencing symptoms. The CBD group reported improvements in measures that included intense pain, sharp pain, cold sensations and itching.

Those results are encouraging, but there are some important limitations. It was a small study, it only lasted a few weeks and it tested one particular topical CBD preparation. We cannot assume that every CBD salve, cream or gel will produce the same results.

The fairest answer is that topical CBD shows potential, but we need larger and longer studies before anyone can say with certainty how well it works for different types of nerve pain.

Can CBD Salve Repair Damaged Nerves?

CBD for Nerve Pain Ingredients

There is currently no good evidence that an over-the-counter CBD salve repairs damaged nerves or reverses neuropathy.

A topical may provide a soothing or cooling sensation where it is applied. Some people also say it makes an uncomfortable area feel more manageable. That is different from treating the condition responsible for the nerve damage.

This distinction matters because neuropathy can be connected to medical conditions that require proper testing and treatment.

If you suddenly develop numbness, muscle weakness, loss of balance or severe burning pain, do not rely solely on a topical product. Talk with a qualified healthcare professional.

Why Do People Apply CBD Salve to Areas With Nerve Discomfort?

The biggest advantage of a salve is that it can be applied exactly where you want it.

If the discomfort is concentrated in your feet, hands, calves or another specific area, you can massage a small amount directly into that location. You are not applying it to the entire body.

A traditional salve is usually made with oils and waxes. This gives it a thicker texture that remains on the skin longer than many lotions or gels.

Some Neuropathy salves also contain ingredients such as menthol or camphor. These ingredients create a noticeable cooling sensation that some people find comforting. That cooling feeling comes primarily from the added ingredients and should not be mistaken for proof that the underlying nerve problem has changed.

CBD Salve, Cream or Gel: Which Is Better?

There is no single topical format that is best for everyone. The right choice usually depends on the texture and sensation you prefer.

CBD salve or balm

A salve has a thicker, oil-based texture. It generally contains oils and waxes rather than a large amount of water.

Salves work well when you want a product that stays in place and gives you time to massage it into a smaller area. They may feel richer or more moisturizing, but they can also feel greasier than a cream or gel.

CBD cream

Creams contain both water and oils. They are generally easier to spread across larger areas and tend to absorb faster than traditional salves.

Someone applying a topical across both feet, the calves or a larger portion of the legs may prefer a cream because it requires less rubbing.

CBD gel

Gels are usually lighter and faster absorbing. Many neuropathy customers tell me that they prefer this type of texture because it does not leave their feet or hands feeling oily.

Some gels also contain menthol, camphor or capsicum to create cooling or warming sensations.

The format does not automatically tell you how strong the product is. Always check the actual amount of CBD in the container, the container size and the complete ingredient list.

What Should You Look for in a CBD Salve?

The front of the label does not always tell the entire story. Before buying a topical CBD product, I recommend checking a few basic things.

Clearly stated CBD content

The company should tell you how much CBD is in the entire container. A large number on the label is not very helpful if you do not know the size of the jar.

For example, 5,000mg in a four-ounce jar is a different concentration than 5,000mg in a much smaller container.

Complete ingredient list

Look beyond the CBD. Menthol, camphor, capsicum and essential oils can change how the product feels and smells.

A strong cooling product may feel good to one person and be too intense for someone else. If your skin is sensitive, perform a patch test before applying it over a large area.

Independent laboratory testing

A trustworthy company should provide current third-party laboratory results showing the cannabinoid content of the product.

Lab testing is especially important because the FDA has found that some CBD products do not contain the amount stated on their labels.

A texture you will actually use

A salve can have excellent ingredients, but that does not help if you dislike the texture and stop using it.

Choose a traditional salve if you like a rich balm. Choose a cream or gel if you want something that spreads faster and leaves less residue.

How to Apply CBD Salve

Follow the directions provided with the specific product you purchase. A simple starting routine is:

  1. Apply the product to clean, dry skin.
  2. Begin with a small amount.
  3. Massage it gently over the desired area.
  4. Give it time to absorb before adding more.
  5. Wash your hands after application, especially if the product contains menthol, camphor or capsicum.

Do not apply a CBD salve to broken or badly irritated skin. Keep it away from your eyes, mouth and other sensitive areas.

If you are using a cooling formula for the first time, test a small amount. Applying more does not always create a better experience, especially with strong cooling ingredients.

How Often Can You Use CBD Salve?

There is no universally established amount or schedule for topical CBD. The appropriate amount can depend on the concentration, ingredients, size of the application area and your own skin sensitivity.

Start with the directions on the label. Apply a small amount and see how your skin responds before using more.

Consistency may make it easier to decide whether a product belongs in your routine, but discontinue use if you experience a rash, irritation or another unwanted reaction.

Which Quiet Monk Topical Should You Consider?

We make several different topical formats because customers do not all want the same texture or sensation.

Quiet Monk 5000mg CBD and 500mg CBG ultimate-strength salve

Our 5,000mg CBD Salve comes in a four-ounce jar and contains 5,000mg of CBD plus 500mg of CBG. It is available in Regular and Cooling Ice. This is the better choice if you prefer a rich, traditional salve that you can scoop out and massage into the skin.

Our 5,000mg Cooling CBD Pain Stick contains CBD, CBG, menthol and arnica. The twist-up container lets you apply the balm directly without getting as much product on your hands.

If you prefer something lighter and faster absorbing, our Neuropathy CBD Cream Gel was made for people who do not want the heavy or greasy texture of a traditional balm.

None of these products is intended to cure neuropathy or repair damaged nerves. The main differences are their texture, strength, ingredients and the type of cooling or warming sensation they provide.

If you are unsure which one makes the most sense, call or email us. I would rather answer your questions than have you order something that is not the right fit.

A Note From the Owner

I have spoken with many customers dealing with burning, tingling and discomfort in their feet and hands. One thing I have learned is that there is no single topical that everyone prefers.

Some people want a thick salve that stays on the skin. Others cannot stand anything greasy and want a cream or gel that absorbs quickly. Some love strong menthol, while others want no cooling sensation at all.

That feedback is why we offer different formulas instead of pretending that one product is perfect for everybody.

I also do not believe in telling people that a topical CBD product will cure their neuropathy. We make strong, carefully formulated products that people can add to their routine, but nerve pain can have serious underlying causes. A good topical should complement responsible medical care, not replace it.

When Should You Speak With a Doctor?

Speak with a healthcare professional if your nerve symptoms are new, getting worse or interfering with walking, sleeping or normal daily activities.

Medical attention is particularly important if you experience:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness
  • Loss of balance
  • An unexplained loss of sensation
  • A wound or sore you cannot feel
  • Symptoms following a new medication
  • Burning or tingling associated with diabetes
  • Pain accompanied by swelling, redness or signs of infection

Finding the cause of nerve symptoms is more important than simply covering them up.

You should also ask a healthcare professional about CBD if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a medical condition. The FDA notes that CBD can interact with certain medications, although the amount absorbed from topical products and its effects are not yet fully understood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CBD salve make nerve pain go away?

CBD salve has not been proven to eliminate nerve pain or repair damaged nerves. Some people use it to soothe a specific area, but individual results vary.

What is the best CBD salve for nerve pain?

There is no single salve that is best for everyone. Look for clearly stated potency, third-party testing, a complete ingredient list and a texture you will use consistently. Decide whether you prefer a regular formula or one with cooling ingredients such as menthol.

Is CBD cream better than CBD salve for neuropathy?

A cream is not automatically more effective than a salve. Creams and gels are generally easier to spread and absorb faster. Salves are thicker and may remain on the skin longer. Your choice should be based on ingredients, concentration and personal preference.

Can I put CBD salve on my feet?

A topical CBD salve can be applied to intact skin on the feet. Avoid applying it to open sores, cracks, infections or badly irritated skin. People with diabetes or reduced sensation should check their feet regularly and discuss wounds or skin changes with a healthcare professional.

Will CBD salve make me feel high?

CBD itself does not create the intoxicating effect associated with THC. Quiet Monk CBD products use broad-spectrum hemp extract with non-detectable THC according to third-party laboratory testing.

How quickly does CBD salve work?

There is no guaranteed timeframe. Added ingredients such as menthol can create a cooling feeling fairly quickly, but that sensation is not the same thing as CBD treating nerve damage. Give the product time to absorb and follow its directions rather than repeatedly applying large amounts.

Can CBD salve be used with prescription medication?

CBD can interact with certain medications, although less is known about absorption and interaction risks from topical products. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using CBD if you take prescription medications.

The Bottom Line

CBD salve may help soothe a specific area affected by nerve discomfort, and a small human study of topical CBD produced encouraging results. The evidence, however, is not strong enough to say that CBD salve treats neuropathy or repairs damaged nerves.

Think of it as a topical option that you may choose to add to your routine—not as a replacement for determining what is causing the pain.

Look for a product with transparent potency, complete ingredients and third-party testing. Choose a salve, cream or gel based on the texture and sensation you prefer, and speak with a healthcare professional about persistent or unexplained nerve symptoms.
